TYPES OF GARDEN CACTI

To the eye of a layman, a cactus is nothing but a crude plant that should be left alone in peace, which is not the case. In fact, what many people do not know is that the cactus is quite resourceful when it comes to the benefits it has to man. There are quite a number of cacti types out there that serve a different purpose. The main types include

  • Orchid Cactus

Deriving its name from the colourful flowers that it sprouts the orchid cactus is among the most beautiful in the cacti family. It can grow to as long as 225 feet but that heavily depends on the climate. They are mainly planted in hanging baskets to add style to the garden.

  • Prickly pear Cactus

Also called the Barbary fig this common type of cactus can reach up to 15 feet tall and 6 feet across. It sprouts yellow flowers, which give off red-yellow fruits that are edible in some parts but majorly used as decorative in gardens.

  • Golden Barrel Cactus

This iconic cactus with its round barrel like shape can turn any garden into a paradise. It can add a striking visual aesthetic to a landscape with its yellowish tinge and near perfect round shape.

  • Golden Ball Cactus

Beautiful like the name suggests these tiny member of the cacti family are yellow and covered with long spines. They grow to an average of 1 meter and grow in clusters.

  • Candelabra Cactus

Among the largest, they grow up to 10 feet high and wide and have very spiky spines and grow ivory white cup-shaped flowers that open during the day and close at night. It’s fruits, although a bit acidic, are edible.

  • Beavertail Cactus

About 20 inches high in size and up to 6 feet wide this cactus has pink flowers that look like they glow and smell like watermelons. They are disk-shaped.
